I have a new voter eligibility test that I truly, honestly think needs to go at the top of every ballot in every election that takes place in this country.  Note:

• It doesn’t imply that people who fail this test go to jail or suffer any consequences other than that their vote doesn’t count.
• It does imply that nobody aside from the voter, the ballot counter, and the garbage can know what happens to each individual ballot. Nobody else will ever know if your vote counted or didn’t; it’s private, as all voting should be.
• It tests knowledge of basic facts, not moral propositions. There are no questions here that start with “should.”

I can’t be the only one who’s deeply uneasy with the notion that people who get these questions wrong have a say in determining laws and lawmakers that affect me and my fellow Americans.  These questions aren’t even remotely hard.  This is baseline shit.  A reasonably functioning mind should be a basic requirement to be a citizen.
